Help raise £60,000 for Cerys

Five year old Cerys Griffiths has been named Child of Courage at the Bridge FM Local Hero Awards.

Sponsored by Payton Jewell Caines, the Local Hero Awards were held to recognise and reward the unsung local heroes who make Bridgend County Borough great!

Cerys, who lives in Pencoed, was born 11 weeks premature and now suffers with Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy. She attends Croesty Primary school in Pencoed.

Cerys’ Mum, Allison Griffiths explains: “Cerys’ mobility is severely affected. She can’t sit unaided let alone stand or walk, the simple things that her classmates take for granted. She is completely dependent on a wheelchair and her one to one support at school. Despite all of this Cerys is a fantastic character. She has a smile for everyone she meets and manages very quickly to become the centre of attention in everything she does because of her wicked personality. She is a very determined little girl and this has proven a massive benefit to her development and any challenge she has been faced with so far at such a young age.”

The family now needs to raise £60,000 to pay for Cerys to travel to America for a specialist operation called SDR(selective dorsal rhizotomy). This is a spinal operation which will take away the spasticity (stiffness) in Cerys’ legs.

Allison says: “We are extremely grateful for all the sponsorship and assistance that local people give. Any support we receive for the Trust is massively appreciated as Cerys simply can’t have this life changing operation without the kind help of the people of Bridgend.”
